Melanie Smith-Fortney, MSN, RN, NEA-BC

Melanie Smith-Fortney is the Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside. She earned her Nursing Diploma at Saint Vincent Health Center School of Nursing, then continued her education while earning her BSN and MSN from Waynesburg University. She is a board-certified Nurse Executive, Advanced (NEA-BC) and a CCRN-Alumnus.

Melanie has worked in various advanced nursing roles since 1998 when she joined UPMC. She was the Unit Director and Clinical Director for the neuro-trauma service line and was a collaborative partner in Presbyterian’s organ donation program and initial Comprehensive Stroke Center certification.  She most recently served as the Director of Nursing at UPMC Presbyterian where she mentored front line staff and mid-level leaders in improving the patient experience and HCAHPS results.

Melanie is a past nominee of the Cameo of Caring APN Manager Award and a recipient of the Award for Commitment and Excellence to Service (ACES). She is a member of the American Organization for Nurse Leaders (AONL). Currently, she is enrolled in Walden University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. Melanie embraces an authentic leadership style, leads by example, and is always striving to improve both the patient and staff experience.
